Frequently Asked Questions

What is a child life specialist?

"Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) play a critical role in supporting child health and wellness, leveraging expertise in helping children and their families cope with stressful experiences in a variety of settings. They provide preparation, education, distraction, play, and coping tools, among many other benefits, to children and their families.

Prioritizing the coping and developmental needs of children and families, CCLSs promote and protect emotional safety in times of duress. This minimizes both the immediate and long-term effects of stress, anxiety, and psychosocial trauma, ultimately empowering children, families, and their support systems."

What ages do you work with?

I work with children from a young age, typically starting around 3 years old, all the way up to late adolescence. It is beneficial to also include the parents or caregivers in the process, and I'm also happy to work with parents and guardians of all ages as well!

What support can I receive during a child life private session?

Child life goals are custom-tailored to each family and unique need related to a medical experience.

Child Life support can include but is not limited to:

-Diagnosis education support (age-appropriate language/teaching of diagnosis, coping tools/managing treatment, medical play, etc.)

-Sibling Support (new baby, NICU admission, medical situation of a sibling, etc.)

-Parental Support (managing behaviors related to medical circumstances, coping as a caregiver, being a medical advocate for your child, etc.)

-Therapeutic support (play-based therapeutic activities for children/teens to promote feeling expression, rehearsal of coping skills, etc.)

-Preparation Support (preparation for a medical/dental procedure, test, surgery, etc.)

-Life Transition Support (back-to-school following a diagnosis, change in treatment such as hospice, etc.)

-Grief and Bereavement Support (preparing for end of life, legacy making activities, memorial/funeral preparation and support, navigating life after loss, etc.)
