FAQs

What is child life?

Child life is focused on supporting the emotional, social, and developmental needs of children, particularly in healthcare settings.

Child life specialists are professionals who work with children and families to help them cope with the stress and challenges associated with illness, hospitalization, and medical procedures. They use therapeutic play, education, and emotional support to help children understand and manage their experiences.

They are like teachers of the hospital or medical environment!

At Child Life To Go, we deliver child life tools, teachings, and resources so you can feel confident and equipped to take them to go for your patients or children.

How will your resources help me?

Our books deliver the words to cope with illness.

Whether you are a concerned parent or an overworked child life specialist, we promise that our books will literally give you child life to go!

With each page you will be able to explore and name emotions related to illness, understand a diagnosis in creative and child-friendly ways, and rehearse coping skills through our thoughtfully crafted activity pages.

Are your books about a new diagnosis for a diagnosed parent or a diagnosed child?

BOTH!

Our "Blank Page" diagnosis education books are crafted in such a way that can relate to the illness of either a child OR the parent.

How can I adjust reading the books for different ages?

What a great question!

Our recommended ages for "The Blank Page" diagnosis education series is ages 3-12.

Keep an eye out for how your child engages in the content. It can be a helpful clue to learn what they need from you.

For Younger Children-

  • Sit side-by-side with them, following their lead when they seem to communicate needing a break (our books are broken up in sections which can give good start and stop points).
  • Practice words together. ("Let's say this word together, 'diabetes'") followed by brief explanations you rehearse over and over again together.
  • All of the teachings use a familiar visual for children to symbolize an aspect of the illness. If you have the supply mentioned at home (example: a lego block) use it and hold onto it as a visual aide while you are reading.
  • Continue to remain with your child during the activity pages. They love your company and help!

For Older Kids-

  • If your child feels "too cool" for a resource like this, remain cool, too, bro! Validate them, but just break the book into certain parts that can still be a helpful tool of empowerment for them. Maybe they just want to check out the activity guide or read "The Teacher Page" portions. We get it.
  • When certain concepts pop up, take time to pause and expand. Ask follow up questions to how the idea in the book might be resonating with them.
  • If there are younger siblings, maybe your "too cool" child can be the teacher and read it to someone younger. Could be a sneaky way of helping them learn AND feel empowered as a teacher themself!
